It helps simplify the fretboard by revealing the relationship between common open chord shapes and note/interval arrangement on the guitar. It may sound like one of those dubious internet guitar tuition scams promising instant god-like shredding abilities, but the CAGED system is actually essential learning for every player. The name refers to five vital open chords: C, A, G, E and D obviously! The CAGED system is worth learning because it brings the fretboard into order by providing a pattern. It increases the speed at which one learns and memorizes chords including the process of learning the major scale. Thus making learning other scales or modes a much more efficient process.
